How to Create a Craft Room in 3 Easy Steps
I think it is every crafters dream to have a craft room of their very own and to decorate it with all the pretty things they love. I know it has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. If your on a budget, however, a craft room can prove to be quite pricey. What do you need in a craft room and how can you do it on a budget?
1) A Desk
It doesn't matter if you have a craft room or just the corner of a room a desk is essential. It can help keep everything organised and provides that much needed workspace. Take a look around second hand stores you can find some gems for next to nothing but you may have to be patient to get what you want at the price you want it. Ikea can be a good place to check out too for cheap desks. As you can see in my craft room we simply fitted a wooden panel to the wall. This was the cheapest option here in Fuerteventura and it gave me maximum workspace for the cheapest price. The key to getting the desk you want is patience and being willing to shop around.
2) The Right Tools for the Job
Depending on your craft, this could be all sorts of different things. For me I love sewing and dressmaking so it is essential to have a sewing machine and the simple tools like fabric scissors, dress-makers chalk etc. This lovely little singer was a gift from a very good friend of mine and it has served me well. Make sure you have the right tools for what you need, enough space to work and a good way to keep it all organised. For some good organisation tips have a look on pinterest. I have a wardrobe to store all my crafty bits and bobs but the tools that I use all the time are in a sewing box on my desk. Remember for certain tools it may be a better investment to get good quality, if it will save you money in the long run. Also remember that while it is nice to support local businesses, as regards craft tools, it is often much cheaper to buy online but as always shop around first.
An Inspiration Board gives you a place to brainstorm ideas, organise your thoughts and pin up inspiration. This really can be anything you want it to be. This board cost me just 7€ from a local China shop here in Fuerteventura. It has been used for many things so it has definitely been a worthwhile investment. I like to have my current project here, as you can see I have a swatch of fabric from my dress and my dress pattern pieces. This means I am organised and don't lose the pattern pieces. My sticky notes set were a gift and I use them for reminders or as notes for future ideas that come to mind. Look out in pound shops for a little board or even as I have done in the past collect your scraps of fabric and make a patchwork pin board for free. You can't get more thrifty than that and at the same time you have another fun little project to get stuck into.
These are just the 3 basic steps in starting to build your craft room. Once you have these steps in place you can start adding to them, making it your own and making it an area full of inspiration. So get crafting, be thrifty and enjoy creating your very own craft room.
